All coverage

Seven coverages, each written out plainly: what it covers, what it does not, and what the deductible actually changes.

Auto insurance

Auto insurance in Canada is regulated by the province you live in, not by Ottawa. Three provinces sell you the basic policy themselves. Québec splits it in two. Everywhere else it is a private market. We start by telling you which one you are in.

  • Public basic coverage in BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba
  • Private market in Ontario, Alberta, Atlantic Canada and the territories
  • Québec is split: SAAQ for injuries, private for the vehicle

Home and condo insurance

A Canadian home policy earns its money in the two weeks either side of a thaw. Frozen pipes, ice damming, sewer backup and overland water are where the claims are, and they are also where the exclusions hide.

  • Guaranteed replacement cost where the market allows it
  • Sewer backup and overland water are separate endorsements
  • Condo unit owners insure the improvements, not the building

Tenant insurance

Your landlord insures the building. Nothing in that policy covers your belongings, your liability, or the hotel bill if the unit above you floods yours in January.

  • Contents, liability and additional living expenses
  • Most Canadian leases now require it in writing
  • Typically $18 to $35 a month across the country

Life insurance

Two questions decide almost everything: how much, and for how long. Term insurance answers both cheaply and honestly, and for most Canadian families it is the whole answer.

  • Term 10, 20 and 30, plus permanent where it fits
  • Critical illness and disability, the two people skip
  • Death benefits are generally not taxable in Canada

Travel insurance

Provincial health insurance pays a fraction of what a hospital in Florida or Arizona charges, and in some provinces it pays almost nothing at all outside Canada. That gap is the entire product.

  • Emergency medical, trip cancellation and interruption
  • Multi-trip annual plans for anyone who leaves more than twice
  • Stability periods are the clause that decides claims

Business insurance

A contractor, a clinic and a café share almost no exposures. A commercial package that treats them the same is a commercial package that will disappoint one of them.

  • Commercial general liability, property and business interruption
  • Professional liability, cyber and commercial auto fleets
  • Certificates of insurance issued the same business day

Bundle, or do not.

Bundling usually takes ten to fifteen per cent off both premiums. Sometimes it does not, and we will say so when it does not.
